
The total area of ownership of 355 km2, of which half is the largest island of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. Living on the islands 107,000 people (1992), 85% of them negros and mulattos – descendants of slaves who worked on the plantations. Apart from these, the Virgin Islands later settled by immigrants from Puerto Rico, Venezuela and other islands of the Lesser Antilles. Half of the believers are Protestants of various persuasions, one third – Catholics and the Jewish community there. The official language of the islands – English. The administrative center of ownership – the city of Charlotte Amalie, with a population of 12,300 people (1990) is located on St. Thomas. The city was founded by Danes in 1672 and received its name on behalf of the Danish Queen.
